Qiyam Al-Layl

O you wrapped in garments (i.e. Prophet Muhammad SAW)!  Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. Half of it, or a little less than that, or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style (Tartil). (Surat Al-Muzzammil: 1-4)

And in some parts of the night (also) offer the Salat (prayer) with it (i.e. recite the Quran in the prayer), as an additional prayer (Tahajjud optional prayer Nawafil) for you (O Muhammad SAW). It may be that your Lord will raise you to Maqaman Mahmuda (a station of praise and glory, i.e. the highest degree in Paradise!). (Surat Al-‘Isrā’:79)

‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:

The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) kept standing (in prayer) so long that the skin of his feet would crack. I asked him: “Why do you do this, while you have been forgiven of your former and latter sins?” He said, “Should I not be a grateful slave of Allah?”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Haraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) as saying:

The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God’s month. al-Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is prayer during the night. (Sahih Muslim, 1163)
