Muslims Are Brothers

by Abdullatef bin Alhadri

Maybe some of us don’t know that we, Muslims are brothers. Of course when we say Muslims, it include muslims and muslimah. Allah knows that some people don’t know it. Therefore, He decided to tell us about that. Allah, our maker, wants us to know it.

Allah says in Quran:

Surely the believers are none but brothers unto one another, so set things right between your brothers, and have fear of Allah that you may be shown mercy.[1]

Our beloved prophet, Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam also taught us that. The followings are ahadeeth[2] mentioned about we Muslims are brothers.

Muslims has to Do Good to Other Muslims

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress[3] him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort[4], Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection[5], and whoever screened[6] a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection .”[7]

Incomplete Faith

Narrated Anas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.”[8]

Right of a Muslim on Other Muslims

Narrated Abu Huraira:

I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the salaam, visiting the sick, to follow the funeral processions[9], to accept an invitation, and to reply to those who sneeze.[10]

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Six are the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim. It was said to him: Allah’s Messenger, what are these? Thereupon he said: When you meet him, offer him greetings; when he invites you to a feast[11] accept it. when he seeks your counsel[12] give him, and when he sneezes and says:” All praise is due to Allah,” you say Yarhamuk Allah (may Allah show mercy to you) ; and when he falls ill visit him; and when he dies follow his bier[13].[14]

Muslims like One Body

Nu’man b. Bashir reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

The similitude[15] of believers in regard to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body; when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and fever.[16]

Muslims like the Bricks

Narrated Abu Musa:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A faithful believer to a faithful believer is like the bricks of a wall, enforcing each other.” While (saying that) the Prophet (ﷺ) clasped his hands, by interlacing his fingers.[17]
